 Introduction - SARS 3a

Sars3a is a (possibly minor) structural protein with three membrane-spanning helices. It has no known counterparts in any other coronavirus. Anti-sars3a antibodies have been found in patient sera. There is evidence to suggest that it interacts with spike protein and may influence its trafficking in the host cell . Expression of sars3a induces apoptosis in cultured Vero cells and upregulates expression of fibrinogen in lung epithelial cells and Vero cells, indicating the possible role of this protein in the pathogenesis of SARS
